A unique attraction in Quebec, the Parc de la Rivière-des-Mille-Îles is the largest protected wildlife area in the Greater Montreal region.

Éco-Nature, in partnership with the Ministère de l’Environnement, de la Lutte contre les changements climatique, de la Faune et des Parcs and in collaboration with the 9 municipalities bordering the river, has been piloting the large-scale project of expanding the wildlife refuge since 2009. In 2022, 432 municipal lots of islands, shoreline and wetlands are being allocated by the City of Laval to the Rivière-des-Mille-Îles Wildlife Sanctuary, increasing its size from 26 hectares to 568 hectares.

With more than 971 hectares under study, the Rivière-des-Mille-Îles Wildlife Sanctuary expansion project will eventually be one of the largest urban wildlife sanctuaries in the province and will ensure the accessibility and sustainability of the site for present and future generations.
